- Story Text: Apple is singing a new tune as its streaming music service debuted on Tuesday (June 30) with a free three month trial. After that, it will cost $9.99 a month. The company joins a crowded field consisting of Spotify, Pandora, Google Music and others.
"It's a three-tier thing. It's a streaming service, so it's all you can eat, whatever you want to listen to at any moment. It is an international live radio station that is fully curated. And it's a connect portal; it's like a social network that allows fans and bands to connect with each other, to engage directly, " said Billboard Magazine's Director of News Shirley Halperin.
Apple's recent spat with Taylor Swift over its decision not to pay artists for songs streamed during the free trial could work to its benefit. Swift complained and the tech giant relented. Some analysts think the move has created goodwill, which could translate into exclusive deals with artists going forward.
"Apple, I think, did the right thing. They are a 700 billion dollar company. The have more money than they probably know what to do with. They did the right thing by offering to pay for these streaming licenses for that 90-day free trial, so they're really eating the cost of that themselves and Eddy Cue even told us, they're all in," said Halperin.
Apple Music is currently available on the iPhone and other Apple platforms. It will also be available for Android users later this year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
