- Story Text: Saudi foreign minister Adel al-Jubeir said on Thursday (July 23) that his country welcomed any agreement that curtailed arch-rival Iran's ability to get nuclear weapons.
"The kingdom's position is that we welcome any agreement that ensures Iran's inability to acquire nuclear weapon and which contains effective mechanism: inspection of all sites including military sites. And that there is also a mechanism to re-apply sanctions in case of any violations of such an agreement by Iran," Jubeir told a joint news conference with Egyptian foreign minister, Sameh Shukri.
Under the July 14 accord, sanctions will be gradually removed in return for Iran accepting long-term curbs on a nuclear programme that the West has suspected was aimed at creating a nuclear bomb. Iran denies it seeks a nuclear bomb.
U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter flew into Saudi Arabia on Wednesday to meet King Salman and his security leadership to reassure the kingdom of America's support after Washington struck the deal with Tehran.
Jubeir accused Iran of meddling in regional affairs.
"The problem that we are facing is related to the interference of Iran in the affairs of the region and also the riots carried out by Iran in the region, on top of it, the support for terrorism. This is a source of concern for the countries of the region," he said.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Shukri said his country had full cooperation with Riyadh over the conflict in Yemen.
Saudi Arabia is leading a Sunni coalition that has carried out air strikes in Yemen against Houthi rebels allied to Iran.
Egypt is part of the coalition that has bombed the Houthi militia and army forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh since March 26.
More than 3,500 people have been killed in the fighting and air strikes so far. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
