- Story Text: Several hundred fans braved the heat in Vienna on Thursday (July 23rd) to cheer for actor Tom Cruise as he celebrated the world premiere of Mission Impossible 5 in the Austrian capital.
Despite temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius, fans waited for hours to try and get an autograph from the star - many succeeding as the actor took one and a half hours to meet fans.
Cruise said at the red carpet that the latest film, Mission Impossible - Rogue Nation will hot everything the fans want in a Mission film.
"I think there are always big problems to solve and ways to figure it out and sequences that keep you on the edge of your seat, and the characters, and it's funny, and fun, and it takes you to a different place - those are the things I hear from people - and there are such fun characters in the movie," he said.
As usual Cruise did his own stunts, including driving hazardous high-speed car chases and hanging onto the outside of an airplane as it takes off.
Asked how he manages to raise the bar each time with stunts, and what keeps driving him to it, Cruise said it was to make films to please the fans.
"To entertain an audience with things, that is what I do it. I think 'what is going to entertain them, what is going to surprise them' and 'what story are we going to come up here' and how to put these things in. As a film maker it is nice to sit back and dream of these things and work with Chris McQuarrie, on this one and the last one we worked on, and we just have a lot of fun."
He also said that while he had aged two decades during the series of Mission films, his secret was to keep pushing himself.
"I just don't sleep, I just keep going. Don't sleep, keep going."
Simon Pegg, the British actor who plays Benji Dunn, agent Ethan Hunt's colleague, said Cruise's stamina was impressive, though daunting at first.
"It is, but Tom is just Tom. It's kind of like when you have been working with him for ten years you get a better understanding of who he is and how he works - and there's a great joy in it. People will always go 'is he crazy, is he like an alien or something?' He really isn't, he is just a really driven guy who wants to do right by his audience and challenge himself and everyone else, and it's kind of admiral, in fact it's extremely admirable," he said.
Rachel Ferguson who plays the British agent Ilsa said she had been dying to do a film where she got to "kick ass" and the trick to a challenge such as Mission was in the training.
"When I came onto Mission I was introduced into an already very maneuvered schedule that Tom has been using for quite some time, and he welcomed me into it. And there are six hours of training, six days a week - something which of course he doesn't need because he is always on top - but it was learning how to stabilize your body, how to not break, you know, muscle tissue. How to be body aware is very important in a mission film."
The latest Mission Impossible film actually features Vienna, with the famous Opera House playing a significant part.
Getting to the opera, where the premiere is taking place on Thursday, was a mission in itself, as roads around were closed for two days around the event as a safety precaution. In the film however the safety precautions around the opera aren't enough to stop Tom Cruise, as agent Ethan Hunt, from making a spectacular appearance.
In the film Ethan Hunt continues his quest to crack the ominous terror organization, the 'Syndicate', despite the IMF (Impossible Missions Force) being officially disbanded and Hunt being a wanted man by the CIA as well as the Syndicate itself.
To his aid come British actor Simon Pegg (Benji) and Jeremy Renner (William Brandt) and Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa - but can the beautifully enigmatic agent really be trusted?.
One thing is for certain, the popularity of the lead actor with his fans. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
