- Story Text: Charlize Theron and Christina Hendricks added star power and glamour to the red carpet on Tuesday night (July 21) for the Los Angeles premiere of their new film, the murder mystery thriller, "Dark Places."
Theron, who also acted as the producer, told Reuters that the film, based on the best-selling novel by Gillian Flynn, offered up some pretty gritty characters.
"It is a huge ensemble cast and everyone has fleshed out bony characters," said Theron. "You can really see that the story is only as good as them and they get to tell it. I think that is what made it really appealing, the idea of going to work with all these characters and telling this story."
Directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner, "Dark Places" tells the story of Libby Day (Charlize Theron), who was only seven years old when her mother and two sisters were brutally murdered by her brother. Twenty-five years later, a broke and desperate Libby has run through donations from a sympathetic public and royalties from her sensational autobiography, without ever moving past the events of that night.
When Libby accepts a fee to appear at a gathering of true-crime aficionados she begins to confront the wrenching truths that led up to that horrific night.
The film, which was shot in 24 days, also stars Hendricks, who changed roles just prior to filming.
"It was exciting," said Hendricks, best known for her role in the television period drama, "Mad Men." "I came in thinking I was playing one role and moments later they offered me a different role. It was really one of the those Hollywood good fortune stories, someone else fell out and you get the role and then you get to dive into it and explore it. It was really very exciting."
The film also stars Corey Stoll and Chloe Grace Moretz.
