- Story Text: Thousands of Houthi supporters gathered on Friday (July 24) in the Yemeni capital Sanaa to rally against Saudi-led air strikes.
An Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia has been pounding the Iran-backed Houthi forces and allied army units loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh since March.
Protesters held banners and waved weapons in Bab al-Yemen area, near the old city of Sanaa.
"The crowd here today in Yemen declares its readiness for a public mobilisation to face the forces of aggression represented by America, the head of evil, and also Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates that is present and fighting in a broad daylight on the independent free Yemeni land," said Ali al-Emad, a Houthi leader.
The Saudi-led campaign is aimed at restoring exiled President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to power.
"We came out against the Saudi-American aggression that wants to occupy this country. And the whole nation needs to act to face this Saudi-American-Israeli aggression," said one of the protesters, Adel al-Sharif.
The foreign intervention and war raging across the country have killed over 3,600 people.
On July 5, air strikes by Saudi-led forces killed 30 civilians in an attack on a market in northern Yemen, the Houthi-run news agency Saba said.
The Houthis took over Sanaa in September and Hadi fled to the southern city of Aden in February before leaving for Saudi Arabia as Houthi forces closed in on the city.
The war in Yemen has pitted Sunni Muslim Gulf states which support the exiled government against the Shi'ite Houthis allied to Iran.
The Saudi coalition has pushed back the Houthis and their allies from control of the southern port city of Aden.
On Friday, two Saudi aircraft landed there bring equipment need to reopen the city's airport, four months after the war shut it down. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
