- Story Text: Placido Domingo will hold a series of small concerts starting June 30 in Madrid's Teatro Real after cancelling his participation in the leading role of Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, following the death of his sister on June 22.
Domingo said on Friday (June 26) that, after the passing of Maria Jose Domingo, 72, he did not feel he could play his role with the intensity and dedication a comical opera demands and is being replaced by Nicola Alaimo.
"The moment came when we unfortunately lost my sister and I saw a mountain in front of me, my responsibility in the theatre. I just felt that, and you'll see it when you see Gianni Schicchi, that it was a opera that I couldn't interpret at the moment in time. It's an extraordinary comedy, written by Pucchini, but deals with death," said Placido Domingo.
In deference to his audience in Madrid, Domingo said he will be holding a series of small concerts in the Spanish capital's Teatro Real on June 30 and on July 3, 6, 9, and 12.
"I have a duet that lasts 18 minutes. There are a couple of romances that last about three or four minutes. We're between two repetoirs of Verdi and verismo, different romances and duets," explained Domingo.
The Spanish tenor, along with the Teatro Real's orchestra, will be interpreting pieces from Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviatta and Macbeth and Umberto Goirdano's Andrea Chenier, in roles attributed to the baritone range.
"It's going to be a success, I think. It's an ingenious work, constant activity. It's difficult at times to keep up with the characters. I advise those who can to come see it two or three times to do so because he (Woody Allen) has done something extraordinary," said Domingo.
"Gianni Schicchi" is a production of the LA Opera and is being staged by Woody Allen, the director's first experience in the world of opera. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
