- Story Text: Russian military and air force on Friday (May 29) carried out the final stages of large-scale military drills.
Some 20 attack helicopters and 80 soldiers, from the Russian military intelligence service, took part in air defence exercises in Astrakhan region in the country's south.
Servicemen carried out simulations of a seizure of the military aerodrome in Astrakhan region. With the backing of Mil Mi-2 and KA-52 attack helicopters, the fighters flew over 700 kilometres from Rostov-on-Don to Privolzhsky aerodrome, which is currently under construction.
Caspian Flotilla infantry were also involved in the drills, backing up the special unit fighters with heavy armoured vehicles.
The manoeuvres, which have been carried out over several days were a part of preparations for a larger drill in September, Tsentr-2015.
Russia's Defence Ministry said in a statement on Monday (May 25) the drills involved air force and air defence units of the Central, Western and Southern Military Districts totalling 12,000 servicemen.
After Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region in March 2014, Russia has held numerous large-scale military drills checking combat readiness.
The focus of the drills, the ministry said in a statement on its website, was on developing a command system in field conditions as well as setting up all-round aviation security measures in new base areas.
The drills in the Central Military District have been reinforced by units from the Western and Southern military districts, the Russian defence ministry said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
