- Story Text: China's Deputy Chief of the People's Liberation Army, Admiral Sun Jianguo met on Saturday (May 30) with representatives from Russia and NATO on the sidelines of the Shangri La Dialogue.
Sun first met with Russia's Deputy Defence Minister, Anatoly Antonov, to discuss cooperation and expanding dialogue between both countries.
He then met with the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Danish General, Knud Bartels.
Bartels said the meeting was a military to military "exchange of views" on world issues, adding they are many points of disagreement but also a lot of interests in common.
China has been one of the main talking points in this year's Shangri La Dialogue with the US criticizing its activities in the South China Sea.
U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said at the conference that Beijing's island-building in the South China Sea was undermining security in the Asia-Pacific.
He said the United States was "deeply concerned" about the scale of China's land reclamation and the prospect of further militarization of the islands, saying it would boost "the risk of miscalculation or conflict."
The official Chinese response will only come on Sunday when Admiral Sun Jianguo addresses the conference on Sunday (May 31).
Earlier in the day, Carter met with his Japanese and Australian counterparts, where they discussed China's reclamation activities among other issues. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
