- Story Text: British boxer Amir Khan and Chris Algieri weigh in on Thursday (May 28) as they get ready to head into the ring.
Khan will defend his WBC Silver welterweight title against Chris Algieri on May 29th.
The crowd cheered loudly for Khan, who weighed in at 146.4 lb. His opponent, Chris Algieri weighed in slightly lighter at 146.2 lb.
Khan has a lot riding on his 34th fight. He is focused on beating Algieri, but has his sights set higher.
He is hoping to challenge Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the unbeaten American's World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council titles.
Mayweather cemented his place among the pantheon of boxing greats by improving to 48-0 with a unanimous decision over Manny Pacquiao earlier this month.
A group of British fans, who call themselves Khan's Army, traveled to Brooklyn from the U.K. to support Khan, hoping that this fight will bring him one step closer to the prize.
"Hopefully when he wins, he gets Mayweather. And Mayweather shouldn't back out from anything. If Mayweather wants it, go and fight Amir then retire properly. You fight Pacquaio, you fight everyone else, right, go for the next champ, which is Amir," said Fahad Hamie, a long-time supporter.
Anjum Mumtaz, also in New York to root for Khan at the match, says he has seen every single fight Khan has had.
"He represents Bolton, he represents Pakistan and he represents all the Muslims around the world. Not only the Muslims but every single one whose a boxing fan and we'll back him all the way through that," Mumtaz told Reuters.
Khan versus Algieri will be held at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn on Friday May 29th, and will be televised on Spike TV at 9 p.m. EST (2100 GMT). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
