- Story Text: The Netherlands' royal couple were in Washington, D.C. on Monday (June 1) to commemorate 70 years since the liberation of Europe, and to thank the U.S. for its role in ending World War Two.
The visit by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima to the U.S. capital marks their first official visit to the country since the new king succeeded his mother, Queen Beatrix, in 2013.
As part of their trip, they participated in a ceremonious wreath laying tribute at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, in honor of the American men and women who sacrificed their lives to liberate Europe 70 years ago.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima will also meet with President Obama at the White House and the political leadership on Capitol Hill, as well as join a roundtable conversation at the World Bank on sustainable development. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
