- Story Text: Hollywood star Rob Lowe will play 'the Vatican's most rebellious priest' in the new British TV comedy drama 'Apocalypse Slough' that is set for release in the autumn 2015.
The new Sky1 TV drama tells a story of the last days of mankind as a comet is heading for an unavoidable collision with earth. The production fuses action, adventure, romance and comedy.
Lowe, who is playing a priest, alongside American actress Jenna Fischer and British actor Mathew Baynton, said the show was a great mixture of both quirky and weird.
"The tone of this (show), I think, is what makes it special. There is no shortage of end of the world movies, we've seen a bunch of them. I've never seen anything like this because of the tone. It's not armageddon, you know, it's also not a comedy, you know, it isn't a comedy. Although some people have you believe it is, it's not. What it is is what I have always loved which is a real, interesting, unique mixture of both. It's quirky, it's weird, really weird, it's really serious and it's really funny. It's almost like a little bit of David Lynch, with a little bit of Michael Bay, with a little bit of... I don't know. It's its own thing, which is really, really good," Lowe said.
The story follows a group of characters from across the world who appear to have very little connection to each other until their lives start to intersect in ways they could never have imagined.
Lowe, who has played a whole range of characters from politicians to doctors and lawyers during his career, said that portraying a vicious priest was an interesting experience which was in part influenced by his personal experiences.
"I relate to sort of having a sort of awakening at a certain point of your life. I've had one myself, I've certainly had my share of fun in the past. I proudly wear the mantle of reformed bad boy. I think those people are interesting. So I sort of drew on that with him. I think there's a way to wear a reformed bad boy in a very sort of cool way," Lowe said.
He also said that he was excited about performing in a British production rather than an American one as it would provide him with more exposure. Yet he refrained from adopting a British accent for the series.
"After I said yes, I woke up in the middle of the night and went 'ah, wait a minute, do I have to have an English accent? Or Italian? It's the Vatican.' 'No, no, no, he is American.' Now, I don't know if that was because they were frightened to see what kind of butchering I would do with the English accent or that's the way the character was written. But not, you're not going to have to suffer my attempt at a British accent yet," Lowe said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
