- Story Text: An appeal to EU member countries to take in migrants on a voluntary basis won't be enough, Germany's interior minister said on Tuesday (June 2) after two days of meetings with his G6 counterparts and the United States.
Thomas de Maiziere told reporters in Moritzburg that a temporary agreement between all European Union states on a voluntary basis was needed to achieve a fairer distribution, something he said would make it easier for some countries to accept.
De Maiziere also called for an urgent international cooperation among EU countries and the United States in the fight against IS.
"We also need it for third-party countries," de Maiziere said.
"Regarding the cooperation with the United States, we urgently need a constructive, effective and serious cooperation between intelligence services which respects constitutional limits. Both sides are dependent on information from the other side whereby we are more dependent on information from the Americans than the other way around."
Responding to recent German media reports that the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) tried to spy on industrial group Siemens with the help of German intelligence, de Maiziere told reporters "my American colleague has again underlined that the Americans are not using any intelligence methods to give U.S. companies a competitive edge. This is a crystal clear statement."
The meeting of the G6 interior ministers from Germany, France, Poland, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom was also attended by U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch and U.S. Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
