- Story Text: Yaounde residents were philosophical on Wednesday (June 3) following the shock news that FIFA president Sepp Blatter had resigned.
People gathered around the newspaper kiosks to read that Blatter had stood down as FIFA president in the wake of a corruption investigation.
"If Sepp Blatter resigned, that means that he understood that he himself contributed to promote the mafia in football. He can't resign like that without having done something bad," said resident Agipe Pius.
Cameroon has been one of the most successful African teams in the World Cup, reaching the quarter-final in 1990 as well as qualifying for six other tournaments since 1982 including the 2014 tournament in Brazil.
"It's a great man because you see, football is not like a basket full of crabs climbing over each other, but it's more like a spider's web, because when the spider spins its web, no matter how big your are, when you get caught in the web, that's where you stay," Ottou Ngala Celestin, president of a local soccer club, said.
Another resident, Tsanga Tsanga Bernard, hoped that the new president will be able to clean up soccer, especially in Africa.
"My most ardent desire for the new president of FIFA is that they can eradicate all the bad things that are like mines waiting to explode in African football. And secondly to put in place good leaders in good places," he said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
