- Story Text: Thousands of Buddhist monks from across Cambodia joined in a march in a royal procession on Wednesday (June 3) in Phnom Penh to present an honorary certificate given by Japan to King Norodom Sihamoni.
The royal procession carrying the certificate to the king was led by the two supreme monks, Bou Kry of the Thomayudnikay (Dhammayuttika Nikaya) and Tep Vong of the Mohanikay (Maha Nikaya), including monks from Japan and Singapore.
Thousands of Cambodian monks and nuns from both of the Shanga systems from all over the country also participated in the march on the streets.
The procession took about half an hour on the street leading towards the Royal Palace. The supreme monks then later handed over the certificate to the guard of honor who carried the certificate into the Royal Palace.
The monks chanted in front of the Royal Palace to honor king Norodom Sihamoni.
"Today, all the monks are attending to honor the king Norodom Sihamoni who received the certificate which was named as Prah Srey Bathom Reach," said Cambodian monk Thong Narith from the Southeastern Kandal Province of Cambodia.
Another monk said that the certificate was given to the Cambodian king in acknowledgment of his achievements in Buddhism.
"Because the counties which respect the Buddhism have seen the power and the development of the respect for Buddhist monks and Buddhism by our king Norodom Sihamoni, that is why they decided to give this certificate to honor him," said Cambodian monk Pich Sochanti from Prek Pra Pagoda.
The certificate was given during the 6th World Buddhism Summit in Japan on December 9, 2014 with 41 participating country-members. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
