- Story Text: Chart-topping Irish four-piece, Kodaline, wowed a select group of fans and media by performing an acoustic set on board the Eurostar train from London to Paris on Wednesday (June 3).
The Dublin band made up of Steve Garrigan (lead vocals), Jason Boland (bass),Vinny May (drums) and Mark Prendergrast (guitar) belted a selection of hits with only an acoustic guitar and basic percussion in the buffet car of the train, while hurtling at speeds of over 180 miles per hour.
"I looked out the window at one point and we were bolting over a motorway," Prendergrast told Reuters. "I was like, that's weird and I had the guitar so I was losing my footing a little bit. But it was cool, weird."
Garrigan added with a hint of humour - "I'm just happy none of us fell because it was really, really rocky. I was just holding on -- for dear life."
The band explained that on their last album tour they had performed in a lot of train stations. "We thought we might as well get on the trains this time and do something a bit different," Boland explained.
The band recently enjoyed top 5 success in the UK with their sophomore album, 'Coming Up For Air', released in February. As part of the album's promotion they completed a sold out tour in the US, and have accrued an extensive celebrity fan base along the way.
"We've got quite a lot which is strange," Garrigan told Reuters. One of the ones was Sacha Baron Cohen who is 'Borat' and he came to a show in LA. He was heckling us and stuff and that was kind of weird."
Another fruitful celebrity friendship is that with former Friends star, Courteney Cox. "We stay in her house and stuff," Garrigan said. "We recorded a song with her fiance Johnny who is in Snow Patrol and that was amazing. We just shot a video as well with Courteney and she directed it which was pretty cool." That video is slated to accompany the band's next single.
May joked that it's still surreal hanging out with someone that they grew up with watching on the TV. "On the last day of the video shoot we actually were like -- we actually all have the box set of 'Friends' and stuff like that and she was like, really?"
The band are currently promoting their new single, 'Ready'. "The video just came out today. We're really happy with the video. It tells the story of a jockey who has fallen from grace and fell - had a horrible accident. It's just about him getting back on the saddle, so to speak," May told Reuters.
'Ready', is out on July 5 in the UK on Sony Music. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
