- Story Text: Heavy fighting and intense airstrikes hit the Mansoura district of the southern port city of Aden Wednesday (June 3), killing at least 20 Houthi fighters in a battle which supporters of exiled President Abd-Rabbo Mansour Hadi said fended off further Houthi advancements.
Fierce clashes erupted as the Iran-allied Shi'ite rebels and militias loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh tried to advance on positions held by gunmen loyal to exiled President Abd-Rabbo Mansour Hadi in Mansoura.
The Saudi-led coalition of Sunni Arab nations provided air support and carried out a series of airstrikes on the Aden district, local fighters told Reuters.
Smoke was seen rising from the district and ambulances rushed to scene. Local fighters said at least 20 Houthis were killed.
The clashes came a day after eight people, all women and children, were killed in a coalition airstrike on three homes on the outskirts of the capital Sanaa. Six other women and children were wounded in the attack.
There were no visible signs of military targets in the immediate vicinity of the attack but there is a small air base about a kilometer away.
Reuters could not independently verify the casualties however a Reuters witness saw pages of schools books, mattresses and clothes strewn amidst the rubble of three destroyed homes. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
