  • Story Text: Demonstrators set a model tank on fire during an anti-G7 protest on Friday (June 5) ahead of the upcoming G7 protest summit.
    Some 400 protesters took part in a demonstration ahead of Sunday's (June 7) G7 summit in the nearby Bavarian Alpine resort Schloss Elmau castle.
    Outside the Marshall Center, a German-American think tank, protesters set fire to a model tank to reinforce their pacifist message.
    A demonstrator who gave his name as Thomas Occupy, said the demonstration was more than just about war.
    "I think that in any case the protest will draw the public's attention to the things the G7 is doing. It is not only about the military, like at this protest - it is also about TTIP [Transatlantic Trade Investment Partnership], [U.S. agrochemicals firm] Monsanto, genetically modified crops, every possible kind of lobbying in favour of multinational corporations. The "war in the barracks" here is just one issue," he said.
    Several demonstrations are expected in the area in the days before the summit and around 17,000 police have been brought in to ensure security before and during the two day meeting.
    German Chancellor Angela Merkel is set to host the leaders of France, the United States, Japan, Canada, the United Kingdom and Italy for the Group of Seven's annual two-day meeting, held in a different member state each year, for discussions about various global issues such a security, energy and the economy.
