- Story Text: German police stepped up security checks on Friday (June 5) ahead of Sunday's (June 7) start of the G7 summit in the Bavarian Alpine resort Schloss Elmau castle.
Several demonstrations are expected in the area in the days before the summit and around 17,000 police have been brought in to ensure security around the meeting.
Police expect around 10,000 people to take part in a large demonstration in nearby Garmisch-Partenkirchen on Saturday (June 6) ahead of the two-day meeting.
Heads of state and government of the Group of Seven industrialised nations will meet to discuss foreign, security and development policy.
According to the German government hosting the meeting, the leaders will also discuss climate and environmental protection, health issues, trade and supply chain standards, and the empowerment of women. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
