- Story Text: A day before the G7 summit kicks off at Schloss Elmau castle in Bavaria, around 1,500 protesters began a demonstration against the meeting in nearby Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the German Alps.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is set to host the leaders from Canada, France, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States for a two-day summit beginning on Sunday (June 7), with demonstrations beginning several days before.
Saturday's march started at the railway station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where protesters who had travelled there on the day were joined by hundreds who had been staying at a nearby protest camp set up for the event.
Under sunny skies, the demonstration has remained peaceful so far. The organisers expect the march to attract as many as 10,000 participants throughout the day.
Police have deployed 17,000 officers to ensure security around the summit and deal with any violence that could emerge from the protests, but a police spokesman said the situation on Saturday was peaceful so far.
Police have said that they expect a large number of protesters who would be willing to carry out acts of violence over the weekend, but two rallies on Friday passed without incident.
