- Story Text: Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Saturday (June 6) met Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the presidential administration building in central Kiev. The two leaders discussed bilateral relations between the two countries as well as global policy issues.
"We highly appreciate firm position of Japan in supporting Ukraine, implementing sanctions, prolonging acting sanctions in case the Minsk agreements are not implemented by the Russian Federation. Thank you very much, Mr. prime minister, for solidarity. Thank you very much for the unity of the G7 countries. It has exceptional meaning for us. Many thanks to you!" Poroshenko told news conference after the meeting.
Poroshenko also thanked Abe for providing loan guarantees in the amount of $1.5 billion.
Japanese prime minister in his turn said his country was ready for further supporting Ukraine.
"I believe that under the rule of such a strong leader and with the support of international community led by the G7 countries, Ukraine will successfully go through difficult times. Japan which will lead the G7 next year plans to make even bigger contribution to the cooperation with the G7 for the sake of peaceful and diplomatic resolution of problems. My visit to Ukraine ahead of the G7 summit proves our strong desire. G7 leaders expect the results of our meeting and plan to discuss these results," Abe said.
Abe said his country supported peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine's east where clashes between governmental forces and Russia-backed rebels intensified despite ceasefire.
"Japan as a country which will lead G7 next year and as a responsible member of the global community will do everything possible for peaceful settlement of problems which Ukraine is facing as well as for a future development of bilateral relations between our countries," Abe said.
G7 summit opens in Germany on Sunday (June 7). German Chancellor Angela Merkel will welcome the leaders of Britain, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, the United States and the European Union at a meeting expected to focus on issues like climate change, the fight against pandemics, Middle East turmoil and an upsurge of violence in Ukraine. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
