- Story Text: Anti-G7 protesters took part in several marches around the southern Germany alpine resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen on Sunday (June 7) with the aim of getting as close as possible to the luxury Schloss Elmau hotel, where world leaders are meeting for a 2-day summit.
Coming from different directions, the protesters took to the roads and mountains to get to the hotel, which is around 17 kilometres from Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
But they are not likely to get anywhere near it.
Around 17,000 police have been deployed around the hotel, which has been blocked off by police with a mesh fence and security perimeter 16 kilometres around the site.
Later in the day, host Angela Merkel will hope to secure commitments from her G7 guests to tackle global warming to build momentum in the run-up to a major United Nations climate summit in Paris in December.
The German agenda also foresees discussions on global health issues, from Ebola to antibiotics and tropical diseases, but that may be overshadowed by Greece's debt crisis and ongoing violence in Ukraine. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
