- Story Text: German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with her counterparts from Japan and Canada on Sunday (June 7) for bilateral talks on the sidelines of the G7 summit she is hosting at a luxury Alpine hotel in southern Germany.
Merkel met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who may face pressure from the other G7 leaders over Japan's greenhouse gas emissions target.
Critics say Japan's target, of cutting emissions by 26 per cent by 2030 from a base year of 2013, is unambitious compared to those of other leading countries and unrealistic because it depends on restoring Japan's nuclear industry in the face of public hostility.
The German chancellor will hope to secure commitments from her G7 guests to tackle global warming to build momentum in the run-up to a major United Nations climate summit in Paris in December.
Merkel also met with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Both Harper and Abe voiced their support for Ukraine during visits to Kiev on Saturday (June 6) before moving on to the summit, as the Ukrainian military reported another serviceman killed in separatist eastern territories after a sharp escalation in violence.
The G7 leaders backed a tough line toward Moscow at the start of the summit, with U.S. President Barack Obama urging the gathering to stand up to Russian aggression in Ukraine.
