- Story Text: Anti-G7 protesters staged one last rally in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on Monday (June 8) before heading home.
As the G7 leader's meeting in nearby Schloss Elmau hotel drew to a close, protesters gathered near the station for one final demonstration.
For the last few days, several anti-G7 protests have taken place in and around the southern alpine resort. There was also a "Stop G7" tent camp set up.
"Stop G7" spokesperson Inke Scherf said she was happy with how the protests had gone and called them "powerful".
"I always find it a bit disrespectful when people say success can only be measured if we were either 5 or 10 thousand on the streets. I have never measured it in such a way. I bring my protest to the street and the protest was powerful," she said.
On Saturday (June 6), as thousands of anti-G7 protesters marched, there were sporadic clashes with police and several marchers were taken to hospital with injuries, but the violence was minor compared to some previous summits.
"The police in Bavaria are so far pleased with how everything has happened here. There were no major security disturbances here in Garmisch," police spokesman Peter Reichl said.
Germany deployed 17,000 police around the former Winter Olympic games venue at the foot of Germany's highest mountain, the Zugspitze. Another 2,000 were on stand-by across the border in Austria. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
