- Story Text: Broadway rolled out the red carpet on Sunday (June 08) for the 69th annual Tony Awards, theater's top honors, in a star-studded ceremony at New York's Radio City Music Hall with Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming as hosts.
Helen Mirren, Ken Watanabe, Bradley Cooper and more were among those seen on the red carpet in advance of the show, along with Sting, who was nominated for best original score for musical "The Last Ship."
"Well you know I don't think of it as winning because I'm not American Pharoah," said Mirren, who was nominated for a Tony Award for her leading actress role in "The Audience."
Michael Cerveris, nominated for a Tony for his leading role in "Fun Home," never expected the musical to receive such a warm reception.
"I guess maybe because the job of trying to tell this story honestly and simply and accurately takes so much concentration that that's sort of all we were focused on," he said.
"Fun Home" broke new ground by being the first musical to feature a lesbian lead character. She comes to terms with her own sexuality and her relationship with her domineering father, a closeted gay man.
Alex Sharp, who was nominated for a Tony for the play "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time," a coming-of-age story about a teenager named Christopher Boone with Asperger syndrome, said he couldn't even think of what it would feel like to win the best acting prize.
"It's inconceivable, honestly," he said.
"I'm just living in the moment, I'm trying to be in the moment and appreciate everything as it happens and I'm so thrilled and honored to be a nominee. I'm enjoying that right now."
Before heading into the show Sting said he would be very surprised if he won the Tony for best original score.
"I'm very proud of the ship we built and our crew and our cast and it would be for them but I'm here to be part of the party," he said.
Bryan Cranston and Judith Light, previous Tony Award winners were asked to weigh in on how winners should appreciate the moment of winning the coveted theater prize.
"There's no advice, it's just, enjoy the moment, really, if that's a piece of advice, because these moments are mercurial and they will change instantly on you and hopefully you'll remember them," Cranston said.
"Be grateful," said Light.
"It's one of the greatest moments of your life and your career, but really more one of the greatest moments of your life."
Harris, who hosted the show last year, is the favorite to win.
