Iraqi forces said they have detained more than 20 suspected militants of the Islamic State during fighting to regain control of area to the west of Samarra in Salahuddin province.
Blindfolded with hands tied behind their backs, 24 men in black shirts and trousers were shown to the media, and large cache of seized weapons including different kinds of shells, bombs were also shown at the headquarters of the army's 17th Infantry Brigade in the town of Balad in Salahuddin province.
"Labayk ya Iraq (We answer your call Iraq) operations are going on to clear the al-Jazeera and al-Badiya area, west of Samarra. We have completed the first and second phases of the operation to clear the pockets (of terrorists) in the area. Thank God we have fully cleared the Line and al-Jazeera areas and as you see we have detained 24 members of ISIS during fighting in the first and second phases of operations. We have killed more than 198 members of ISIS, seized tens of weapons, bombs and a factory to make booby-trapped cars, sticky bombs and a number of heavy and medium weapons," said Brigadier Maad Badai Faraj, Commander of the 17th Army Infantry Brigade.
Seized weapons also included Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), a large number of mobile phones, which are used by militants to trigger IEDs remotely and more than 100 new and unused SIM cards.
After a number of defeats in recent weeks in Anbar province west of Baghdad, Iraqi forces are making some progress against Islamic State in Salahuddin, north of Baghdad. Following the re-capturing of Tikrit, Iraqi forces are now close to securing the town of Baiji. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
