- Story Text: Some 447 migrants were brought into the Sicilian port of Pozzallo on Tuesday (June 9) after being rescued at sea by the Italian coast guard.
The rescue took place on Monday (June 8) after the coast guard picked up the migrants from three different vessels.
Medical officials carried a baby off the vessel as it docked at port, before other migrants began disembarking.
The migrants are likely to be moved to another part of Italy as the holding centres nearest the port are virtually at saturation point.
UNHCR said on Tuesday that about 100,000 migrants have arrived in Greece and Italy so far in 2015.
Some 5,900 migrants were plucked from rickety boats at the weekend as they made the perilous sea crossing for North Africa to Europe and thousands more are believed to be waiting in Libya to make their journey.
The tide of migrants and refugees risking the often deadly sea crossing to reach Europe from Africa is on the rise this year and the U.N. refugee agency estimates more than 1,800 have drowned. About 800 perished in a single shipwreck in April.
In response, the EU has bolstered its presence in the Mediterranean, but it is still debating how to handle the refugees and migrants once they are ashore. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
