- Story Text: Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos laid a wreath on Beijing's Monument of the People's Heroes at Tiananmen square on Friday (June 12), to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the second world war during his state visit to the country.
Dos Santos began his six-day visit to China on Monday (June 8) at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. The visit is aimed at securing funds needed to revive sub-Saharan Africa's third largest economy, which has been struggling since oil prices dropped by half in mid-2014.
Oil exports, half of which are sent to China, account for around half of Angola's GDP, 80 percent of tax revenues and 90 percent of foreign exchange earnings.
On Tuesday (June 9) Dos Santos and Xi inspected the guard of honour during a welcoming ceremony before overseeing the signing of a series of agreements including economic, trade, financial cooperation by Angolan and Chinese delegations, followed by bilateral talks.
China has strengthened its ties with Angola in recent years and the southern African country now sells around half of its 1.7 million barrels of daily oil output to Beijing.
Beijing has issued several oil-backed loans to Angola dating back to 2003, a year after the African nation emerged from a 27-year civil war. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
