  • Story Text: Thousands of Mexicans descended on the Monument to Child Heroes in Mexico City on Saturday (June 13) in an attempt to lock in the Guinness Record for the world's biggest selfie.
    Guinness officials were on hand throughout the morning as participants filed into the square.
    Organizer Victor Hugo Rodriguez said it was a record attempt meant to bring Mexicans together.
    "It is a photograph that unites everyone. There is no charge to participants, everything is done through sponsors. In Mexico, people unite in an event of empathy. No one pays for this event," he said.
    Spirits were high among participants who took their own selfies as they waited for the big moment.
    "It feels really cool to be part of a new record here in Mexico, our country, I am very excited," said participant Ashley Ontiveros.
    Guinness declined to say if Mexico had managed to achieve the record. They said they will take the photo back to headquarters for official review and will release the verdict soon.
    The current record holder is unclear. Mexico's event organizers say they the U.S. hold the record for the world's biggest selfie, taken in Georgia last month with 2,997 people. But the Guinness company says there is no current title holder.
