- Story Text: French President Francois Hollande arrived in Algiers on Monday (June 15) for what the presidential office described as a "friendship visit".
The visit was expected to mark a "significant deepening of dialogue and political consultation between the two countries, based on the Algiers Declaration on Friendship and Cooperation, signed by the two Heads of State in December 2012," the presidency of the Republic said Sunday (June 14) in a statement.
In addition to bilateral relations, Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and Hollande were to discuss a number of regional and international issues relating to security and peace in Africa and the Middle East.
"The future is economic development, closer work between our universities and cultural institutions. The future is to work together for the Mediterranean, which unites us. But there are also grave matters. The subject that brought us together several times is security, namely security in the Sahel. I saluted the work done by the Algerian authorities, namely with regards to peace in Mali following our military intervention. And then we have discussed major items such as Libya. Security is the fight against terrorism and I want to underline what is our common fight, against this common enemy," Hollande said.
Relations between France and its former colony have witnessed "significant progress in recent years and are expected to be further developed," the presidency statement said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
