- Story Text: British singer-songwriter Rhodes captivated crowds when he performed four songs soundtracking Burberry's Spring-Summer 2016 Men's Collection show in London. He accompanied the models as they graced the catwalk on Monday (June 15).
Along with a 24-piece orchestra playing specially created arrangements, the multi-instrumentalist whose full name is David Rhodes, played to a star-studded audience including actors Samuel L. Jackson, Chiwetel Ejiofor and model Suki Waterhouse. "I really enjoyed it because I could really hear everything," he told Reuters. "The atmosphere was beautiful with the sides open. The breeze was so nice coming through. It felt like I was in a different country, a different planet or something like that."
Burberry's chief creative and executive officer Christopher Bailey, who is known to be a champion of new music stars like Tom Odell and Clare Maguire, selected Rhodes to perform. "I feel really privileged and it's an honour to do it. I think it's really cool how he (Christopher Bailey) is introducing artists to a world that might just not be aware of it at all, and I think it's also really cool for like for artists who might not be aware of fashion to come and do something like this and have our eyes opened to this whole very, very different world. My sister's a designer so I kind of know a little bit about fashion and I do like fashion, I love tailoring, but it's still very, very eye-opening doing something like this," Rhodes said.
Having put out four critically acclaimed EPs, Rhodes is releasing his debut full-length album in September, which has been over a year and a half in the making. "I've been experimenting and just learning about who I want to be. I wrote these songs but I knew that I didn't want to be a balladeer folk guy, I wanted something more."
His next single, 'Close Your Eyes' which he performed at the Burberry show, has a particularly interesting story behind it. "I only sang for the first time just over two years ago," he said. "Before that I was playing a lot of music, I played bass in a band for three years and played guitar a lot, but I just had this real deep fear of singing, and I don't know why or what spurred it or anything. But when it came to doing my first ever show I had to develop a coping mechanism and I just used to close my eyes."
'Close Your Eyes' is out now. His debut album, 'Wishes' will be released September 4 on Rhodes Music / Ministry of Sound. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
