Palestinians held a funeral service on Sunday (June 14) for a man killed after he was struck by an Israeli jeep in the occupied West Bank during an army raid.
Palestinian men wept over the body in the Ramallah morgue as the funeral procession started marching to nearby Qafr Malik for burial.
The military and locals gave conflicting accounts of the circumstances of the incident.
A military spokeswoman said the jeep, which was in the village of Qafr Malik as part of an operation to arrest suspected militants, accidentally hit the Palestinian after he threw a petrol bomb at it. She said the driver was startled and swerved, hitting the man, and added that a military investigation would be launched.
Palestinian officials and Local residents denied the Palestinian had attacked the jeep, however, saying the man was walking to work at a chicken farm when he was run down on the main street and then crushed as the vehicle crashed into a wall and overturned.
"This is indeed another crime in the black folder of the (Israeli) occupation that tries every day to kill the Palestinian people. Raiding a village that was trying to sleep quietly like all of our villages and camps, but the occupation tries daily to attack us. (This is) a chase of the young man, Israel says it was an accident, but no it was a chase," said governor of Ramallah, Leila Ghannam, who attended the funeral.
Another resident said said the man's death sparked confrontations between stone-throwing Palestinian youths and Israeli troops. The military spokeswoman said the disturbances were already under way when the collision happened.
Israeli forces regularly mount raids in the West Bank in search of suspected militants, often touching off clashes with local residents. On Wednesday (June 10), Israeli soldiers shot dead a member of the Islamist militant group Hamas in the town of Jenin in one such operation. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
