- Story Text: Argentine tennis star Juan Martin del Potro, announced on Monday (June 15) that he will undergo another operation in an attempt to fix a lingering left wrist injury.
The winner of the 2009 U.S. Open and 2012 Olympics Bronze medalist expressed frustration about having to go under the knife.
"Several doctors and above all my main doctor, recommended another surgery. That's why, with all the pain this causes me, with all the frustration it means for me and all the not so good moments I am going through, I have decided to go for it and go for surgery again and I hope that it will be a definitive solution to cure my wrist forever," he said.
The 26-year-old tennis player, originally from Tandil, Argentina, said he looked for many other alternatives before deciding that surgery was the best option.
"I looked for many alternatives, many opinions, many diagnoses and all of these paths led back to the same place and with the same objective. If I want to play tennis again it means facing a surgery and to do it once again with the doctor I have confidence in because he fixed my right hand and thanks to him I could play many more years - thanks to him my right wrist is well," he said.
Del Potro, who has only played four matches this season, called on his fans for support.
"Next Thursday I will go for surgery, so anyone who wants to support me and pray that everything goes well will be welcomed to do so and after I will explain how everything went, I will keep you informed about how things are going in my life. Many thanks and a big hug," he said.
Del Potro's decision to have the operation leaves him virtually out of July's quarterfinals series for the Davis Cup against Serbia in Buenos Aires. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
