- Story Text: More people were evacuated in Indonesia on Monday (June 15), two days after a powerful eruption at Mount Sinabung, as the local authority warned of high volcanic activity.
Hot ashes were still emerging from the crater after its latest eruption over the weekend.
A researcher at the volcano observation station said the volcano remains very active.
"Our worry is that Sinabung remains very active till now and the hot ash still threatening the neighbouring areas," said Armen Putra, the head of Sinabung volcano observation station in the town of Karo.
Putra added residents from six villages in the area were evacuated.
"We evacuated a new group of residents from a few villages today," said Putra.
Mount Sinabung is one of nearly 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which stands along the "Ring of Fire" volcanic belt around the shores of the Pacific Ocean.
The volcano has become increasingly active in recent years. Indonesian authorities rated it at "danger" level, the highest level for volcanic activity since early this month.
No casualties were reported from Saturday's (June 13) eruption as most of the residents near the area had been evacuated.
Tens of thousands of residents have been evacuated since it erupted in February 2014 when it killed 11 people. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
