- Story Text: Portugal's president said on Monday (June 15) an agreement between Greece and the troika should be reached, "this week if possible."
"Portugal wants very much that Greece stays in the eurozone and we still do hope that negotiations are successful, so the Greek people will continue to use the euro as their currency," President Anibal Cavaco Silva, who is head of state in Portugal, told reporters in Sofia.
"I strongly hope that by the end of this month there will be a solution, because otherwise we will be faced with a very serious problem," he added.
Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev, who was welcoming Cavaco Silva to the Bulgarian capital, said his country was seeking a series of steps to move towards euro membership.
"Firstly Bulgaria should join the Schengen area, secondly Bulgaria should join the SSM (Single Supervisory Mechanism of the European Central Bank), thirdly we should join ERM-2 [pre-euro Exchange Rate Mechanism]," he told journalists.
Greece is ready to restart negotiations with its international creditors at any time, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' office said on Monday, a day after talks broke down, bringing the threat of a default closer. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
