- Story Text: European Parliament President Martin Schulz said on Monday (June 15) that an agreement with Greece on the debt crisis was not only necessary but still possible.
Speaking in Berlin, Schulz told Reuters Television "the government in Athens does not understand that it is putting its people into a very difficult situation," adding that Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis should "not tour Europe to deliver big speeches but rather do his homework in Athens."
Talks on ending a deadlock between Athens and its international creditors broke down at the weekend and the prospect of a debt default drew dramatically closer.
Schulz said that everything should be done to avoid a so called Grexit, Greece leaving the eurozone.
"If it can't be avoided I think above all the Greeks will pay a high price because the country will fall into poverty within just a few weeks, a poverty much more dramatic than the one they are experiencing today. But the damages for the European economy are incalculable," said Schulz. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
