- Story Text: Paris' International Air Show kicked off on Monday (June 15) with the first demonstrations of key aircrafts to open the week-long fair.
Airbus' military was one of the first to take off in the skies of Le Bourget, north of Paris, an aircraft which is under scrutiny following the plane crash last month of an A400M in Spain.
The troop and cargo carrier crashed outside Seville, Spain, on May 9 after three of its huge turboprop engines froze just minutes into a routine, pre-delivery test flight, killing four of its six crew members.
But this time round, the big bird displayed its capabilities with sharp manoeuvres and taking tight corners.
Another star of the show was Dassault's Rafale jet fighter which took to the sky with a roar.
France has this year already concluded deals for jets to Egypt and Qatar and is a finalising a contract in India. It is currently in talks with the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia.
Dassault showed off it's newest business jet, the Falcon 8X. The French company competes mainly with General Dynamics unit Gulfstream and Canada's Bombardier for sales of business jets, which make up 73 percent of revenues.
A very small and quiet aircraft, Airbus' first electric plane the E-FAN, was seen flying over Le Bourget. The all-electric plane is powered by two electric motors with a combined output of 60 kilowatts. The two-seater, which Airbus says is suited for short missions such as pilot training and aerobatics, can run on its lithium-ion polymer batteries for half an hour, with the aim to get it up to an hour.
The international show is the biggest of its kind with 2260 exhibitors from 47 countries. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
