- Story Text: French President Francois Hollande said on Friday (June 19) Greece and its international creditor must press on with talks aimed at clinching a deal that averts a debt default while being in line with European Union rules.
"We have to use the time which separates the moment yesterday during the Eurogroup meeting when we discovered there is still no agreement and the meeting planned for Monday, to prepare everything so that the negotiations can be taken up again and that the discussions can reach a compromise solution, but a compromise founded on the European rules," Hollande said during a joint news conference with Slovak President Andrej Kiska in Bratislava.
Eurozone leaders will hold an emergency summit on Monday (June 22) to try to avert a Greek default as Athens and its international creditors remain deadlocked over a debt deal. "And I want to do everything - and I will have a meeting soon with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to make sure that this discussion can be engaged during the time which separates us from the Eurozone meeting - because it is an important meeting, and I don't want us to reunite just to ascertain facts. Which would be that of a failure," Hollande added. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
