  • Story Text: The foreign minister of the Yemeni government in exile said on Friday (June 19) that U.N.-sponsored peace talks with Houthi fighters in Geneva had not reached agreement on a ceasefire to end nearly three months of fighting.
    "We really came here with a big hope and we were, and still we are, optimistic that we will go into a peaceful solution for Yemen under the umbrella of the United Nations. But unfortunately, the Houthis delegation did not allow us really to reach to a real progress as we expected," Reyad Yassin Abdulla told reporters.
    "We were wishing and hoping that we could achieve greater progress in order to achieve peace and a permanent truce, a ceasefire, and not just a temporary one, but what the Houthi militias did, through their delegation's intransigence by not showing up and committing, their lack of commitment to all procedures, what they did is what hampered what we were hoping to achieve," he added.
    He later told Reuters that no date had been set for a second round of peace talks though he said he had not given up hope.
    His comments came after some five days of shuttle diplomacy between the delegations by U.N. special envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed.
