- Story Text: More than 80,000 people prayed at Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque, marking the first Friday prayers of Ramadan on Friday (June 19), Israeli police said.
The al-Aqsa compound also includes the octagonal Dome of the Rock, which was built by Jerusalem's Arab conquerors in 691 on the spot where Muslims say the Prophet Mohammad began his Night Journey to heaven.
Al-Aqsa stands on Israeli-controlled land that may be the most disputed religious spot on earth.
Jews call the raised ground at the eastern edge of Jerusalem's Old City the Temple Mount, while Muslims know it as the Noble Sanctuary. Both claim sovereignty over it.
Thousands of Palestinians had queued from the early hours of the morning to pass through the Israeli army's checkpoints between the West Bank city of Bethlehem and Jerusalem, and Qalandiya checkpoint separating Ramallah from Jerusalem.
Palestinian worshippers attended prayers in al-Ibrahimi Mosque in the West Bank city of Hebron.
Ramadan is the Muslim month of abstinence from food, drink and sex during daylight and is marked by festivities at night, with lanterns, balloons, firecrackers, feasts and visits. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
