- Story Text: Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson arrived to a rain swept Leicester Square for the Royal Film performance of his eagerly-anticipated film 'The Lovely Bones'.
Attending the world premiere was The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall along with cast members including, Oscar winning actress Susan Sarandon, Saoirse Ronan, Rose Mciver, Carolyn Dando, Reece Ritchie and writer Alice Sebold.
'The Lovely Bones' is Jackson's first film since his Oscar nominated King Kong.
Talking to Reuters from the red carpet, Jackson gave his reasons for not taking on another blockbuster:
"Certainly it was a very different film for us, which was part of the appeal of doing it, because I could have easily done another big blockbuster effect film and that is what people where expecting me to do so I just like the challenge of making a smaller movie, much lower budget, which reducers the pressure and enables us to make a much more complicated, interesting themes and more challenging film I guess."
Based on the 2002 best-seller by Alice Sebold, "The Lovely Bones", it tells the harrowing and intensely emotional story of a raped and murdered 14-year-old girl named Susie (Saoirse Ronan), who watches from her heavenly vantage point while her family on Earth mourns her loss and try to find her killer.
New Zealand actress Rose Mciver who made international screen debut was as a child star in Jane Campion's 'The Piano', believes that the films dark and challenging subject mater will not be off-putting to audiences.
"It isn't actually as dark as, I think, people expect. I mean it has got an obvious subject mater that is quite overwhelming, but really it is what happens after Susie's death and it is all about how the family come together and how she, in heaven, is able to let go of the people on earth. So the actually there is a lot of hope and it is a bit of an inspirational story I think."
Fifteen year old actress Saoirse Ronan, who was has already been nominated for best supporting actress Oscar for her role in 2007's Atonement relished the challenge of working with on of the most respected directors in Hollywood.
"It was wonderful working with Pete, he is a very interesting director to work with. A different technique he used with me especially when we were in heaven, he used to actually talk to me during takes which I found very helpful and he used to play music and everything but he was very very involved, physically and he has got a big heart so it was great, he has got a big heart."
In America the film will be rated PG13 giving it the best opportunity to maximize tits box office potential and even before its release, it is once again generating Oscar buzz for Jackson.
