- Story Text: Mexican security forces in the western state of Jalisco have captured the son of one of the country's most wanted drug lords, a state government spokesman said on Tuesday (June 23).
Authorities said Ruben Oseguera, the son of Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera, is believed to be an important figure in his father's gang, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which in recent weeks has become a major headache for President Enrique Pena Nieto.
Mexico's National Security Commission Director Monte Alejandro Rubido told journalists the suspect was captured after joint federal police and military efforts in the municipality of Zapopan in Guadalajara.
"Federal forces directed by units of the Mexican army and the federal police captured Ruben Oseguera Gonzalez in the municipality of Zapopan in Jalisco. The detainee is the son of Ruben, otherwise known as Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, head of and founder of the previously referred to criminal organisation (Jalisco New Generation Cartel)," said Rubido at a news conference in Mexico City.
Officials reported the younger Oseguera, known as El Menchito, was captured in a pre-dawn army operation in a house in Guadalajara and is believed to be second-in-command at the notorious New General cartel.
Rubido revealed that the suspect also held dual nationality with the United States.
"Oseguera Gonzalez is 25 years old and is originally from the state of California in the United States of America and so has dual nationality. He is considered the second-in-command in the criminal organisation of the group headed by his father," he added.
According to a Jalisco state government official, no shots were fired but images presented to media of Oseguera showed the suspect with bandages on his nose and apparent bruising to the face.
The New Generation gang was blamed for killing at least 20 members of federal and state police during attacks in March and April, and on May 1 it shot down a military helicopter in Jalisco.
Officials in the state said gang-related attacks on May 1 followed a botched attempt by the government to capture El Mencho. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
