- Story Text: Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt visited the Belgian peacekeeping contingent in south Lebanon on Friday ( December 22) before meeting Lebanese prime minister Fouad Siniora in Beirut.
Verhofstadt arrived at midnight on Thursday with a delegation of 70 officials who accompanied him to the South to visit Belgian troops in town of Tibnin, where the troops are stationed.
"I'm here to see what Belgian troops are doing , demining medical support and protection force , and it's important that UNIFIL are doing very well in south Lebanon," Verhofstadt told reporters while he toured a minefield.
Some 140 Belgian soldiers in September joined a United Nations (U.N.) peacekeeping force monitoring a truce between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas in south Lebanon.
The U.N. force was deployed in the south of Lebanon after U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 which halted Israel's 34-day war with militant Islamic group Hezbollah on Aug. 14. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
