- Story Text: A sea of armed militia still roam Sudan's Darfur region freely despite the recent peace initiatives by both the United Nations and the African Union.
This has not only continued to hamper humanitarian operations, but has also continued cause panic, fear and bruising of the inhabitants.
Recently four armed men in military uniforms attacked a UN office for refugees wounding a guard, the UN said on Tuesday (June 14). It was not known whether the attackers were criminals, members of one of the rebel groups or of the one of the pro-government militias rife in the region.
The conflict in Darfur has killed more that 200,000 and displace another 2.5 million people into camps. Hundreds of women have been victims of rape and murder in the camps, as militia and government sponsored Janjaweed wrecked havoc to gain control of the area.
Actress Mia Farrow who is visiting the camps met with victims of rape and decried the lack of protection for the women.
"There has to be some form of security provided fast and not a moment to loose, they are looking towards UN forces to come and help the AU provide protection, there is no protection for them, they describe being raped when they leave the camp and they describe being injured and attacked when they leave the camp as well," said Farrow .
The situation in Darfur according to the UN has greatly deteriorated. The harsh weather conditions, coupled with the lack of proper health facilities and water, makes life in Darfur unbearable.
The UN has proposed to send a peacekeeping force into Darfur by early 2007 but the Khartoum government has not been quite receptive of the idea. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
