- Story Text: Colombian President-elect Juan Manuel Santos announced on Wednesday (July 28) his selection for defense and interior ministers to replace the outgoing administration of President Alvaro Uribe on August 7th.
"The selection of German Vargas as interior and justice minister and Rodrigo Rivera as defense minister. I wanted to publicly announce these two choices," Santos said.
Santos who served as defense minister himself under Uribe is expected to continue with much of his predecessors popular security measures and his choice of Rodrigo Rivera for defense minister reflects this.
"I will take the position starting August 7th with the idea to continue with and consolidate the democratic security policies of the last 8 years of President Alvaro Uribes government in which Doctor Juan Manuel Santos had such an important role."
Rivera is a former senator of the liberal party and was educated in Colombia and the United States.
