- Story Text: Israeli authorities on Friday (March 23) condemned Hungary's decision to suspend charter flights for Soviet Jews wanting to emigrate to Israel via Budapest and said they were doing all they could to obtain a reversal.
Avi Pazner, the prime minister's spokesman, said Israel was "very sorry to hear about the decision," effective Thursday (March 22), and was in touch with both the Hungarian government and "our friends in the American administration" to see if they could help.
The Hungarian Embassy in Tel Aviv said threats from the Islamic Jihad for the Liberation of Palestine, an underground group in Lebanon, had led the state airline, Malev, to announce the suspension.
Arabs are fiercely opposed to the expected influx of some 100,000 Soviet Jews this year because many are likely to set up home in controversial Jewish settlements in the Israeli-Occupied Territories of the West Bank and Gaza.
Soviet Jews who are already living in territories said on Friday (23/3) that the Hungarian decision could put Jews in danger due to a recent rise in anti-semitism in the Soviet Union. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
