- Story Text: The ExCel Centre in London's Docklands hosts the first ever official Star Wars convention to be held out of the United States as part of the 30th anniversary celebrations of the 1977 film.
White-armoured storm troopers, robed Jedi knights and Princess Leia look-alikes roamed the ExCeL exhibition hall at London's Docklands on Friday (July 13) to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the "Star Wars" film phenomenon.
Actor Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the first three films, was on hand to open the event billed as the first ever official "Star Wars" convention to be held out side of America open to the general public, as thousands of fans young and old shopped for memorabilia, posed for photographs and generally immersed themselves in ways of "the Force."
Michael Cox, who had traveled for 25 hours by plane from Australia to be at the convention said, "It is a chance to be among 20 to 30 thousand odd people into the same thing, which you ordinarily wouldn't have."
Buck (pronounced Book) a young Queen Padm Amidala look-alike form Holland, was thrilled to be able to travel to London to be at the event, saying, "It is a very big convention in Europe, the first one, so big, and America is too far away for me so I just wanted to go because it is a really amazing experience to be here."
The event will run for three days and will give young fans the opportunity to join the convention's Jedi Training Academy, where they try their hand at engaging in one-on-one light sabre duels with a very authentic-looking Darth Vader, and receive guidance from a Jedi master. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
