- Story Text: On the same day that the Iraqi parliament approves a landmark security pact, U.S. troops celebrate Thanksgiving away from home.
U.S. soldiers in Iraq celebrated on Thursday (November 27) Thanksgiving holiday with a traditional turkey meal.
The celebration took place at COP 838 U.S. camp in the southern part of Baghdad.
"So today we got a Thanksgiving year at camp COP 838. We are celebrating the Thanksgiving day with our national police brothers, just bringing a little bit from the United States over here, so we can celebrate together as one family," said Captain Emiliano Tellado.
While most soldiers expressed disappointment at not being with their families on the traditional holiday, many said they were thankful just to still be alive.
"Wish everybody a happy Thanksgiving back home. Everybody here in Iraq also have a great day. Back home, all my family, my friends and all my guests...... have a happy day," said one soldier, Sergeant Beauchamp.
The celebration came on the same day that Iraq's parliament approved a landmark security pact with the United States that paves the way for U.S.
forces to withdraw by the end of 2011.
The deal, which parliament linked after days of fractious negotiations to a series of promised political reforms and a public referendum next year, brings in sight an end to the U.S. military presence that began with a 2003 invasion. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
