- Story Text: The United States army in Germany ships a total of some 300 military vehicles to Iraq. U.S. soldiers of the "Stryker Brigade Combat Team" in the Bavarian town of Grafenwoehr loaded so called stryker vehicles onto trains destined for the German North Sea port of Bremerhaven on Thursday (July 12) from where the load will be shipped to Kuwait for arrival in mid-August, according to the U.S. army.
According to the U.S. army, the stryker "is a highly deployable-wheeled armored vehicle that combines firepower, battlefield mobility, survivability and versatility, with reduced logistics requirements."
Asked what he expected from his mission in Iraq, Major Jon Pendell told Reuters "it's still combat, combat is dangerous but I think we've trained to the point that we're ready for it."
"We're going to do a great job over there and we're also looking forward to our upcoming missions, whatever they may be," Major Pendell said.
The unit of U.S. soldiers based in the town of Vilseck, near Grafenwoehr, will hold a farewell ceremony on August 3 before it deploys to Iraq.
The stryker vehicle "was named in honour of two Medal of Honor recipients: Pfc. Stuart S. Stryker, who served in World War II, and Spc. Robert F. Stryker, who served in Vietnam," according to the U.S. army. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
