- Story Text: Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish and the stars of "Sucker Punch" hit the red carpet in Hollywood Wednesday night (March 23).
The film is the brainchild of "300" and the "Watchman" director Zack Snyder and follows a young girl, played by Emily Browning, who is institutionalized by her stepfather.
The girl copes with the confines by retreating into her mind and creating a new world inside her imagination. Unrestricted by time and space she decides to escape with the help of four other girls. On the way they have to fight everything from serpents, samurai's, and Nazi zombies.
"When I first read the script I was about ten pages in and I couldn't believe that it was on paper. I couldn't believe that someone had come up with concept and actually transferred further into scenes into a script," Abbie Cornish said, who plays Sweet Pea.
In order to prepare for filming the action-packed sequences the five females leads, Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone and Jamie Chung trained for three months in martial arts, firearms, swordplay and dance. They also had to dead lift two hundred and thirty five pounds.
"We do so much stuff in movies that is not real. You know we're always trying to figure out how do we get something real. But when you suffer in the gym that's real like anyone knows, that when they hurt, they hurt. And they really suffered together in a way that, yeah, there's tears but in the end that's what really drew them together," Zack Snyder said.
The actresses said that the training and what it was like to be on set was different then anything they had ever experienced. Browning said, "it was the most fun I've ever had working on a film."
"Epic, crazy, like fantastical. Like, life altering. I've never been demanded of so much. I've never able to do so much. It was incredible the things we got to learn. And like the challenges and like the amount of rewards this film had. It was kind of, I kind of feel like I've been spoiled for life," Jena Malone said.
Initial attention may be focused on Zack Snyder's breathtaking visuals and fight sequences but the film stars said it was more about what the mind can do and the journey people take. Vanessa Hudgens said if she saw the movie when she was thirteen it would of changed who she was as a person.
"I just mean it's one of the more empowering things that a female can watch. I left the movie theater thinking I could accomplish anything. So I think if I saw it as a thirteen year old. I would be ready to tackle the world. I wouldn't be the shy little me that I was," Hudgens said.
"I hope that people are extremely entertained but I hope that girls get to finally see some people in an action film that they can associate with. There's a lot of cool, varied interesting female characters and hope girls are excited by that," Browning said.
The subject of another powerful female made it's way on the red carpet as Vanessa Hudgens' talked about the death of screen legend Elizabeth Taylor
"Of course she was one of the most magnificent, timeless classic beauties. I mean my heart goes out to her. I'm sending my prayers," Hudgens said.
