- Story Text: Libyan rebels vowed on Wednesday (April 27) to take the key oil town of Brega amid a stalemate on the desert road that links it to Ajdabiyah, 80 km (50 miles) further east.
"They [NATO] are bombing more, but they can't strike the Grad missiles and the tanks that are buried below the ground. There has to be good planning. There is no planning," said rebel soldier Adnan Al-Shaari.
Grad missiles are Russian-made munitions fired in multiple volleys, usually from the back of trucks.
Rebels intent on overthrowing Muammar Gaddafi fought battles with government loyalists for weeks after an uprising erupted in February.
Insurgent fighters reported clashes in Brega last week.
One rebel said they were now in the process of erecting a new gate in their colours of red, black and green near the western entrance to Ajdabiyah to replace the old one which was painted green, a colour associated with Gadaffi.
Military deadlock in Libya has exposed growing international rifts, with critics of NATO bombing calling it another case of the West trying to overthrow a regime by stretching the terms of a U.N. resolution. The rebels themselves have sometimes accused NATO of not doing enough to drive back Gaddafi's forces.
The war has split the oil producer, Africa's fourth biggest, into a government-held western area round the capital Tripoli and an eastern region held by disorganised but dedicated rebels. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
